Africa. Ten subspecies scattered across sub-saharan W Africa southwards to Angola and E Africa from Ethiopia southwards to South Africa.

Least Concern

NBN atlas has 120 records as at end 2024. Map Here.

A pair at Landguard Bird Observatory, Suffolk in 1990 were nest building. Another there in 1992. One was Barnstone Notts in November 2003. Birds have also been recorded in Lincs.
