This species and the Cape Canary Serinus canicollis were considered to be one species until recently. The Cape Canary is confined to South Africa and southern Mozambique

Native Range

Africa. Patch distribution in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Angola.
