South America. The race spinicauda is common in the southern half of South America, from Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and southern Brazil to Tierra del Fuego and including the Falklands. Birds that breed in the southernmost parts of its range winter as far north as southern Brazil. What may be a sub-species is resident on South Georgia and is known as South Georgian Teal (A. georgica georgica. It is the southernmost duck in the world.

The South Georgian Teal is said to breed prolifically in captivity following the importation of wild birds to boost the genetic diversity of an established population.
