Central and South America. The West Indies, Galapagos and various regions of South America with the largest range encompassing eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, northern Argentina and southern Brazil.

Least Concern

In Notts, 1 at Collingham Dec 2021

Can survive some frost and easy to keep. Does not hybridise readily but crosses have been reported with Yellow-billed Pintail, Speckled Teal, Wood Duck and Brazilian Teal.
