Occurs commonly in captivity where it often breeds and is well known to escape.

For a long time this species was on Category E only but it was later placed also on Category D. In 2021, following a review of the guidance to deciding the wild or escaped status of wildfowl, a bird seen at Plex Moss, Lancashire 5th December to 17th January 1970 and in subsequent years until Janury 1974 was promoted to Category A (though it remains also on Category E).

Ross's Goose is a long-distance migrant and the population has grown massively in recent decades.
