Africa and Asia. Sub-Saharan Africa from Senagal and Guinea eastwards to South Sudan and Ethiopia. Most of India, N and E Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh.

This species has been naturalised in Britain since 1969 hence its classification of C1. it is also on Category E as recent escapes also occur.

London and East Kent have the biggest breeding populations. There are clusters of records from Birmingham, Manchester and South Yorkshire. Nottingam has a small population around Wollaton and Wollaton Park, but most major towns and cities have been colonised.
