Stable isotope analysis from a first-winter bird, shot in Essex in 2007 showed no evidence of it having originated in Spain or Africa and suggested an origin in northern Europe (outside its natural range). (BOURC 39th Report). The species was in category D from 1993 and since no convincingly wild birds were recorded it was moved to category E in the 45th report though it was noted that the potential for vagrancy still exists.
