North and South America. South-western USA and central America and a different race colloquially known as "Bay-winged Hawk" in Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, south to Argentina and on the western seabord of Chile.

A popular bird with falconers and a frequent escape which can survive in the wild for many years and is often loyal to an area. A few birds breed in the wild and it often hybridises with Common Buzzard.
