Asia. The species is resident and restricted to the island of Japan from Honshu southwards to Kyushu

Not widely kept in Britain or Europe and not being sold during a search in 2017. A bird apparantly of this species was seen and photographed at Blacktoft Sands in 2006 and in 2010 a bird that had been present for two years in County Cork, Ireland was joined by a second bird.
