Asia. Breeds in northern China and neighbouring countries and N Japan and winters S Japan, Korea, eastern China to N India.

The BOURC 39th report commemced a review by stable isotope analysis of a drake shot on Shapinsay, Orkney in November 2000.

The 49th (October 2018) Report was undecided as to whether the species should go into category A or E. (BOURC 49th Report)

Two Nottinghamshire records, both males and both considered escapes at Lound in 1985 and Colwick/Holme Pierrepont in 1998.
