Asia and North America. Breeds in far NE Russia and W Alaska and winters in Kamchatka, the Aleutian Isles and SW Alaska.

It was confirmed breeding on Walney Island, Cumbria where there is an established feral population though only one or two pairs breed and the young birds rarely fledge.
