Native Range

Europe, Africa and Asia. S Europe eastwards to India and northern Africa. It is migratory in Europe, northernmost Africa and most of Asia, but resident in other regions of Africa and in India.

Endangered

Birds shot in 1825 and 1868 have been accepted as being wild vagrants and the species forms part of the British list (under category B). All others, and there are only a few, the most recent of which was 2021 have either been rejected (Cat E) or are still being considered (Cat D) by the BOU.
