South America. Resident in Uruguay and northern Argentina and also breeding in southern Argentina, these southern breeders winter in northern Chile, southern Bolivia, Paraguay and southern Brazil.

Kept at several bird gardens but said to need protection in harsh weather. Evidently escapes have occured but survival in the wild in Britain seems unlikely.
