Africa. Southern Sahara and Sahel from Mauretania eastwards to the Red Sea coast and southwards to Kenya. Also southern Africa from Angola and Namibia to Mozambique.

Occasional escapes from Ostrich farms and collections are usually quickly recaptured or destroyed as the species is potentially dangerous. As the species is flightless, this is an easy one for the BOURC!
