Native Range
North and South America. Several races. In North America the race septentrionalis breeds in western Canada and western US and winters further south, in SW USA, middle America and northern Colombia. Other races are resident in Colombia, Peru, Chile, Bolivia and NW Argentina.

An adult male was in the Outer Hebrides during May/June 2001 and one was reported from Hampshire in November 2004 but the birds were considered to be of captive origin.
