Native Range

Asia. Breeds in east Russia, northern and eastern China, Japan and winters the Malay peninsula, Indochina, Borneo and Sumatra.

An adult in Norfolk in October 2004 was considered to be of captive origin. (BOURC 34th Report). Another bird, a first or second winter was in Kent from January to March 2014 and this was accepted as being a genuine wild bird and it has been admitted to category A. (BOURC 46th Report).
