Sub-Saharan Africa from the Senegal, Guinea and Ghana in the west to central Sudan in the east. Also Angola to Mozambique further south and out of the breeding period, there is expansion in their range including intoTanzania and Kenya.

I have not found any records of the bird in the wild in Britain, but there has evidently been at least one. It is kept in captivity but rarely.
